India has an explicit Premium Rate Service concept in official regulation. TRAI, the statutory regulator under the TRAI Act, 1997, regulates telecom tariffs (via numbered Telecommunication Tariff Orders) and consumer protection; its Telecom Consumers Protection Regulations, 2012 define 'Premium Rate Service (PRS)' as a service charged at rates higher than the consumer's normal tariff plan, and require that for every premium-rate call the rate be conveyed to the consumer via a voice alert (in English and the local language) before the call materialises. Numbering is administered by the Department of Telecommunications: the National Numbering Plan (2003) lists the abbreviation 'PRM – Premium Rate' and allocates the '0900' code to 'IN Service – Premium Rate.'
